Deep retrofit and house extension

About This Project

This project is located in Waterford City, on the south coast of Ireland.

The objective of this project was to redesign the house layout and design an extension to the back and side of an existing bungalow. We wanted to maximize space, add light and improve the movement of the residents around the house. It wasn’t a huge project, but we wanted to use our methodology which seeks to ensure that tiny additions impact existing architecture in a big way.

To meet these objectives, we came up with two simple extensions to the back and side of the building and extended the master bedroom slightly to provide a walk-in wardrobe and en suite bathroom.

A new boiler and thermal insulation ensured energy efficiency and warmth in the extension.

We wanted to make sure that when the large windows open to create great synergies between home and garden, interior and exterior materials interact to connect the spaces. The new design was deliberately kept very simple and modern, with a large floor to ceiling sliding doors giving way to a garden patio, and brick cladding on the exterior of the build.
