Under the umbrella of Fumbally Exchange, ROJO Studio Architects, together with George Boyle Designs were invited to take a part in a competition for Grow It Yourself (GIY) Headquarters in Waterford.
The aim of the GIY movement is to teach and encourage people to grow and eat food produced by themselves. The concept for this project was inspired by the image of a little plant sprouting in the middle of the desert, dry soil, symbolising the ‘rebirth’ of this movement.
The development was to accommodate a growing/cooking school, restaurant, offices and three acres of vegetable gardens.
Our idea was to incorporate the organic form of the cracked dry soil as a layout for a three acres of vegetable garden with one of the dry mud segments becoming the footprint for the building with a sloping grass roof.
